Job Title: Cognizant Engineer – NSTX-U Recovery Project

The Cognizant Engineer (COG) for assigned NSTX-U modifications reports to and receives functional direction from the PPPL Engineering Department and is matrixed to the NSTX-U Recovery Project; the Recovery Associate Project Manager provides project direction. The COG provides engineering oversight and support for the safe execution and completion of the assigned work in accordance with approved designs and PPPL policies, programs and procedures including Engineering Department design change control requirements.
CORE DUTIES:

Reviews and approves modification implementation documents (e.g., installation and test procedures, travelers and job hazards analyses.

Leads procedure walk-throughs and pre-job briefings.

Oversees installation of NSTX-U modifications and through direct observation and ensures that 1) JHA and safety rules are being followed, 2) modifications are being installed in accordance with procedures, drawings and specifications, and 3) work is progressing on schedule.

Identifies and takes or prompts timely action to correct adverse safety, quality and performance observations.

Interfaces and coordinates with support organizations (e.g., engineering, QA/QC, ESH, PPPL and external fabrication shops).

Provides recommended NRC dispositions.

Reviews and approves design changes.

Review and approves post-modification inspections and tests.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:
-
BS degree in Mechanical Engineering (advanced degree preferred).

10 years + experience with planning, supervising, and directing mechanical installations and modifications in construction, operations, maintenance, outages at commercial nuclear power plants or Department of Energy national laboratories or equivalent, highly regulated work environments.

Understanding of systems and component integration with experience in final installation, testing and startup of systems.

Understanding of project schedules and working with multi-discipline trades (e.g., electrical, mechanical).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (including unique software/hardware requirements).
REQUIRED:

Demonstrable competency in AutoCAD, CREO software

Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Certificates and Licenses

OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety desirable

Ability to work under highly disciplined controls and stringent safety environments

Ability to understand written, detailed work instructions

Ability to communicate with supervisor, co-workers and front-line workers

Strong inter-personal skills in working with multi-trade workforce such as electricians, riggers, and heavy machine operators

Must be able to perform physically demanding work without medical restrictions

Must be able to lift to 50 pounds

Work will be near static magnetic fields

Capable of climbing ladders and working at heights from scaffolding, platforms and powered aerial lifts without medical restrictions
